Selling your creations

So I have a question for you all: have you ever tried selling your creations? The time consuming ones? If so, how do you price them?

I’ve made various dresses, skirts and blouses for friends and charged for the fabric and a random amount which varied (generally between £25-40). It was never really about the money, and the amounts would never have been equal to time and effort put into it. I enjoyed making thing for friends and the money I got I used for my own next sewing project.

But I’ve been asked by someone to remake my McCall’s M4769 dress for his wife. He wants to pay for it and as he isn’t a close friend (nor do I know his wife) and the McCall’s dress was a very time consuming project, I am inclined to properly charge for it. But I have no idea how to set my price?  Any suggestions?

Add yours

  1. If I was pricing it I would add up your fabric and notions cost plus add your time to make the dress (say $20/hr or so, I’m in the US) at the least. You could easily double that amount though as a retail outlet would. Hope that helps!
